The Crater Lakes Trail outside Nederland, CO provides ample opportunity for those who want a little extra time in the wilderness, literally. Nestled inside the James Peak Wilderness, there are 3 lakes to fish: 2 lower lakes & an upper lake above treeline.

Hiking Information

The trail is around 6-8 miles - ROUNDTRIP: Depending on if you stop at the lower lakes or continue to upper Crater Lake. It starts off relatively mellow (9000 ft elevation), but the middle section is a little steep. Fortunately it's well maintained and a lot of rock "steps" are built in to the trail. Then it mellows out again near the lower lakes (10600 ft).

If you hike to the upper lake (11000 ft), it is steep! But the views are worth it 😅

Packing List

Water! At least 2 liters. You should plan to be out all day long.
Hiking Poles: it really conserves energy and helps on the descent too.
Rain gear - high elevation storms come quickly.
Food! Breakfast, lunch, snacks
Main backpack: to hold your fishing gear & food & water
Small/Lightweight fishing pack with the basics: nippers, tippet, indicators, etc.
Sunscreen
Hat
Sunglasses

Fishing Info

Majority of the lakes hold brook trout, up to 12" length, who are eager to eat dry flies. Although CPW says they stock Native Cutthroat Trout.

Expect the usual methods including nymphs, streamers, and dry flies. The hatches include midges, Tricos. Note that scuds and fairy shrimp make up a large portion of their diet also.
