How to be a Trip Captain
So, You Want to Be a Trip Captain? Here’s What to Know!
Thinking about stepping up as a Trip Captain this year? Awesome! Trip Captains are the heart of HPD — they make our adventures happen and help keep the club rolling with great fishing, fun, and friendships. And the best part? You don’t need to be a professional guide — just someone who loves fly fishing and wants to share a day (or weekend) on the water.
Here’s what you’ll need to include when planning your trip:
1. Date & Location
Pick your date early and choose the water you want to explore — whether it’s a favorite stream, a new stillwater spot, or a multi-day adventure.
2. Meeting Time & Place
Set a clear meeting time and place so everyone starts on the same page. It could be a park-and-ride, fly shop, or the trailhead — whatever makes sense for your trip.
3. Your Contact Info
Members will need a way to reach you with questions. Include your phone number or email when posting or announcing the trip.
4. Recommended Flies & Gear
Help everyone be prepared! Share a few suggested flies or setups that have worked for you — nymphs, dries, streamers, or anything local that might be hot.
5. Basic Trip Info
Give a quick overview: wading or boat fishing, easy or tough access, are float tubes helpful, is it a half-day or full-day outing, etc. The more info you share, the better experience everyone will have.
6. Food & Fellowship
Decide what the lunch plan is!
– Are folks bringing their own?
– Are you meeting somewhere for lunch?
– Or maybe you’re planning a BBQ or tailgate at the lake or campground?
Whatever the plan, let everyone know so they can plan accordingly — because let’s face it, food and fishing go hand in hand.
Being a Trip Captain isn’t about being the best angler on the water — it’s about bringing people together and keeping the HPD spirit alive. Each trip adds something special to our club, whether it’s a great day on the river or just good laughs at the end of it.
So pick a spot, and lead the next adventure. HPD will help promote your trip, and we’re here to support you every step of the way.
As always you can contact me directly with any questions!
